Bring Food and Nutrition Expertise to the Table This Month
Although New Year’s resolutions often involve plans to lose weight and to change eating habits, in my practice we find that March is the month when many individuals start to re-commit to eating right. Days are starting to get longer, the time changes and on a warm day we shed our gloves, hats and maybe even our winter sweaters and jackets. With these changes come the realization that as the weather warms we will want to wear shorts, swimsuits and other lighter clothes.
Coincidentally, March is National Nutrition Month, a nutrition education and information campaign created by the American Dietetic Association. This promotion and the publicity that surrounds it is designed to focus Americans’ attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy lifestyles that include eating right and exercise. You will see more TV shows featuring Registered Dietitians and hear more public service announcements that feature good nutrition and healthy eating. In Your Whole Life you will see that I recommend consulting a Registered Dietitian for specific individual nutrition advice if you have a serious medical condition such as Diabetes, Heart Disease or an Eating Disorder. Did you know that your health insurance plan may cover these visits?
This month you may even want to invite a Dietitian to attend Your Whole Life group session to answer specific food and nutrition questions. Registered Dietitians are the food and nutrition experts, who have training and clinical experience that no other health professionals have. They are the professionals who can give you the latest personalized information based on the scientific evidence. They are the ones who can translate all of the conflicting information you may read or hear on TV.
To find a Registered Dietitian in your area, visit the American Dietetic Association at www.eatright.org. Simply go to the link for “Find a Nutrition Professional” on the top right of the home page.
